Youth tackle formation rules: Pop Warner, AYF, USA Football
Short answer
Many youth tackle leagues play NFHS-based rules with their own modifications, which vary by organization and age division. The Playbook Caller checks the NFHS base book only. Pop Warner, AYF and USA Football programs publish their own rules: check your league’s current rule book for anything it changes, and follow it where it differs.

Verdicts are for the NFHS base book. Your youth league’s own rules may change them.
What we check, and what we do not
Under the NFHS book, the app checks the high-school base: at least five on the line and no more than four backs, five linemen numbered 50-79, the scrimmage-kick formation and its numbering exception (in part), and the free-kick alignment.
It does not know your league’s changes. We do not summarize Pop Warner, AYF or USA Football rules here, because they differ by organization, division and year. Your league’s current rule book is the source.
How to use the NFHS base with a youth team
Start from the base rules on the line count and the numbering rule, then mark up anything your league changes. Our free pregame card is a blank form for the unusual sets you want the officials to know about.
The Playbook Caller checks alignment at the snap only. Motion, shifts, timing, contact and penalties are not judged.
3 things coaches get wrong
- Assuming a youth league follows the NFHS book word for word. Check what yours changes.
- Copying a high-school kickoff chart without checking the league’s kicking rules.
- Treating the app’s NFHS verdict as your league’s ruling. It checks the NFHS base only; the league book and the officials decide.

Does The Playbook Caller have a Pop Warner or AYF rule book?
No. It checks the NFHS base book. Youth-specific rules are not modelled.
Which book should a youth coach pick in the app?
NFHS, then check anything your league changes against its own rule book.
Is the free card useful for youth coaches?
The NFHS card covers the base rules and carries a note that youth leagues modify them. The pregame card works for any level.
