The line and the backfield
How many players can be in the backfield?
Short answer
No more than four, in high school, college and the NFL, and the quarterback counts as one of them. NFHS 7-2-5a and NCAA 7-1-4-a-4 state the four-back limit directly; the NFL gets there by requiring seven or more players on the line (7-5-1(a)). A fifth back is an illegal formation.

Who counts as a back
Any player who is not on the line of scrimmage is a back: the quarterback under center or in the gun, running backs, fullbacks, wings, and slot receivers set off the ball.
The NFL adds that no player may stand neither clearly on nor clearly off the line, except one player directly behind the snapper (7-5-1(d)). College requires every player to be a lineman or a back (7-1-4-a-2).
What The Playbook Caller checks
The app treats anyone less than half a yard off the ball as on the line, and everyone else as a back. Under NFHS it reports "no more than 4 backs"; under NCAA and the NFL it reports "at least 7 on the line". With eleven players those are the same test.
The Playbook Caller checks alignment at the snap only. Motion, shifts, timing, contact and penalties are not judged.
3 things coaches get wrong
- Forgetting that the quarterback is a back. Empty sets with four receivers off the ball plus the quarterback have five backs.
- Motioning a receiver back off the line before the snap and ending up with five backs at the snap.
- Setting a slot half on and half off the line. Officials want every player clearly on it or clearly off it.

Does the quarterback count as a back?
Yes. Under center or in the shotgun, he is not on the line of scrimmage, so he is a back.
Can I have 5 backs if I only have 10 players?
No. High school and college cap the backfield at four whatever the number of players, and the NFL requires seven on the line.
What is the penalty?
In college, a live-ball foul, 5 yards from the previous spot (7-1-4). In the NFL, loss of five yards (7-5-1). Check your state or league for high-school enforcement.
